I’m jumping on the bandwagon!

What is Onyx Sorghum? Have you heard that commercial on the radio for Grain Berry cereal? They talk about onyx sorghum being an ancient grain that is packed full of goodness.  Immediately I am skeptical. 496Like, ya, sure…”ancient” like, created in a lab yesterday. BUT, after doing my research today, I stand corrected. Onyx Sorghum seems to be pretty darn awesome.

It looks like quinoa and is super versatile for cooking. People are using it in the same way they use quinoa as a grain substitute, oatmeal substitute, ground up as flour, putting it in stews, tacos, etc. This “super” grain has a lot of awesome health benefits and…are you sitting down? It is NON GMO! Well, for right now it is. Because of all the health benefits, farmers are afraid they may not be able to keep up so in the future, they may create a GMO version that is pest and weed resistant but for right now, we are safe.  Here are the health benefits of this all natural, cholesterol free, gluten free, non-GMO, kosher product:

*May* inhibit cancer tumor growth. Studies have been done to show this has strong antiproliferative activity against colon caner

Protects against diabetes and insulin resistance- bran may affect biological processes that are important to insulin resistance

May help manage cholesterol-I’m not happy about this but they tested this on gerbils and found that the healthy fats in the sorghum reduced “bad” cholesterol.

Because the grain is high in fiber and has a descent amount of protein, it can help maintain healthy weight when used as part of a healthy diet.

The product comes in “regular” and whole grain and ¼ cup equals 160 calories, none of which are from fat. There is a company called Wondergrain that also makes an all purpose flower used for cooking.  I’m sure you could grind it yourself if you are feeling frosty.

I think I am going to put this stuff on my next shopping list and see what all the fuss is about.dog bandwagon
